From: hucke@ux1.cso.uiuc.edu (Matt Hucke) Subject: "Lights Out" in Chicago Date: 20 Sep 1993 23:04:18 GMT Today's UIC student newspaper (a weekly), the "Chicago Flame", had an article on the "Lights Out" gang initiation. It mentioned that fliers were being distributed throughout the city. [Insert standard rumor here.] The UIC police "also sent out memos warning motorists to be aware of the situation of the new gang initiation. According to Sergeant Thomas Kiska of the UIC police, the initiation is just a rumor and not true at all." Several fliers are printed on the Illinois State Police letterhead, but these are apparently forgeries, photocopied from the original homemade papers. "Illinois State troopers and [Master Sergeant] Pariser are not aware of any incidents that have occured in Illinois based on the accounts on the flier." There was more to the article (which I'm not posting, to keep the copyright lawyers away), but not much more real information besides: the police know of no actual crimes of this description, unknown persons are circulating these notices (sometimes using police letterheads), and the UIC police have helped spread this UL. -- Proud member of P.E.T.A. - People for Eating Tasty Animals MS-DOS 6.0: "A fool and his money are soon parted." hucke@ux1.cso.uiuc.edu WWIVNet 1@3251 * TEAM OS/2 * Univ of Illinois, Chicago
